International Conference on AI and Human Development in Bali

The Department of Psychology at The University of Hong Kong co-organised the international academic conference “AI & Humans — Shaping the Future”, held on 14-15 August 2026 at the Tsinghua University Southeast Asia Center in Bali, Indonesia. The conference was jointly organised by HKU and Tsinghua University, bringing together researchers from Hong Kong, Mainland China, Indonesia, and other regions to explore the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and human development.
Led by HKU’s AI, Society & Social Dynamics Strategic Research Theme (SRT) of the Faculty of Social Sciences, together with the Departments of Psychology and Geography, the conference featured interdisciplinary discussions on human-centred AI, mental health and wellbeing, education, psychological interventions, neuroscience, social mobility, and environmental sustainability.
The Department of Psychology was represented by Professor Zhansheng Chen, Head of Department, as well as Professor Cecilia Cheng, Professor Xiaoqing Hu, Professor Charlene Lam, and Professor Benjamin Becker, who shared their latest research and insights on AI and psychological science. The programme also fostered dialogue among academics, policymakers, and students, highlighting the importance of evidence-based and human-centred approaches to AI innovation.
The conference further strengthened HKU’s longstanding collaboration with Tsinghua University and underscored the Department’s commitment to advancing interdisciplinary research at the intersection of psychology, technology, and society.
